Hispanic Students’ Interest in S.T.E.M.
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
The Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) and the National Research Center for College & University Admissions (NRCCUA) announced today the results of a new study which found Latino high school students over the past six years are increasingly more interested in math, science and engineering subjects with a decrease in technology.
Latino youth have a rising interest in subjects dealing with science, math and engineering and with baby-boomers soon leaving the workforce, America needs to invest in the next generation and this study shows the burgeoning Latino community is a great place to start.
Studies have shown that the United States will face a critical shortage of engineers, scientists and other technically-trained workers in the near future and the challenge is to convert the Latino youth “interest” into college education with a major in the S.T.E.M. areas.

Latino Tween Buying Power Growing the Fastest
In the U.S. demographics there are more people in the 10 to 19 age group than those 65 or older: 42 million compared with 37 million and the younger group are active consumers and quite sophisticated in terms of their shopping selection. - They currently spend about $120-billion (U.S.) annually and the growth rate in their spending is running at about 4 per cent a year. These kids are “getting older younger,” meaning they become as acquisitive as adults at younger and younger ages.
As for what they like to spend money on, favorite purchases are clothes, music, electronics, video games, jewelry, entertainment, fast food, soft drinks, cosmetics and magazines. The Hispanic/Latino “tween” market is growing the fastest — at about six times the rate of the overall market and it is a market that is simply too large to ignore.
By 2010, there will be about 4.5 million U.S. Hispanic children between ages 10 to 14, a figure which is expected to rise to almost 11 million in 2050, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. Overall, by 2023 minorities will comprise more than half of all children under 14.
