Sharp Growth in Suburban Minority Enrollment Yields Modest Gains in School Diversity
“The student population of America's suburban public schools has shot up by 3.4 million in the past decade and a half, and virtually all of this increase (99%) has been due to the enrollment of new Latino, black and Asian students, according to an analysis of public school data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center."

Hispanic Moms Make Meal Choices for their Family - A Comparison between Hispanic and African American Households
Children of both African American and immigrant Latina mothers ask for pizza, chips, sweets, and soda, according to focus group research reported in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, but the similarities end there. (The majority of parents in the study are economically disadvantaged, being single parents, having low incomes, and having low educational attainment.)
African American children ask for cereal, ramen noodles, hot dogs, and fast food, and Latino children ask for beans, plantains, and vegetables. African American parents say their children are more likely to ask for snack foods than healthy food or meals. Latina moms say their children request both snack items and meal items. African American children ask for fast food four times per week, but Latino kids ask for it only once per week.
The majority of Latina moms (71%) say that they buy whatever their child asks for. The remainder say that they do so with a few qualifications, such as if their child has been well-behaved or the food asked for isn’t greasy. African American moms place a variety of restrictions on fulfilling their child’s food requests, such as whether it’s affordable. The majority of African American moms say that the family decides as a group what’s for dinner, but Latina moms (79%) say that they make the choice themselves.
