Washington is “Most Bicycling Friendly State”
Washington has been rated by the League of American Bicyclists as the nation’s number one “Bicycle Friendly State” for the second year in a row. Washington’s strong commitment to bicycling through its policies, programs and facilities has again earned the state national recognition for its bicycle-friendly communities.

In 2008, Washington was named the first recipient of this now annual ranking of all 50 states. The Bicycle Friendly State Program is generously supported by the national bicycle advocacy group “Bikes Belong” and bicycle manufacturer, “Trek.”

Congressman Hastings Leads Efforts to Protect Washington Wineries

Congressmen Doc Hastings (WA-04) and Jay Inslee (WA-01) today led a bipartisan group of lawmakers in a letter to United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk asking that the Administration take steps to protect the rights of American wineries and vintners to sell their wines in the European Union (EU).

In a September 2008 decision, the EU gave notice terminating provisions of the Wine Agreement of 2006 that allowed U.S. wines with labels containing certain otherwise prohibited "traditional terms" to be sold in European Community markets.  This notice made it illegal for American wineries such as Chateau Ste. Michelle in Washington, and Chateau St. Jean, Chateau Montelena and Clos du Val in California, to export their wines to EU member countries.

“Washington has one of the richest traditions of entrepreneurial wine growth of any region in the world,” said Hastings.  “With one of three jobs in Washington tied to trade, it’s important that our wineries have access to international markets.” Hastings states.
