Curriculum Development for Latino Students

A new campus culture has been in the works for the past 16 years to help Latino students bridge the gap to reach a college education.Programs such as PUENTE (bridge in Spanish), MESA, GEAR UP and AVID, support the academic achievement of under served students, including the ever growing Latino student population.

These programs are expected to become increasingly necessary in our public schools as the number of Latino students soars and which doubled between 1990 and 2006.By 2020, one in four students will be Latino up from one in eight just 19 years ago.

Beyond bridging the language gaps, schools need to work on building students’ social capital by developing their sense of self and offer them culturally relevant curriculums that provides them with a sense that their ancestors, or members of their cultural group, have been important players in the country they are living in, and creates a greater bonding to the educational system and to American culture.

Hispanics Still Spending in Tough Economic Times

With the average size of the Hispanic family larger than non-Hispanic at 3.1 vs. 2.8 and with more children between 0 – 18 years old than any other segment, the U.S. Hispanic market is booming. Hispanic households across the United States will sharply increase their economic clout over the next ten years.

The demographic explosion has continued since 1990 and there is no let up. The fact is Hispanics love to buy and almost always buy in cash. -- This is not a debt-ridden community.  For years they learned the hard way that to have something, one has to earn it and save.

The Conference Board's Research Center states that the under 44 Hispanic market is going to grow from a purchasing power of $295 billion in 2008 to $397 billion by 2010 and with the Hispanic household being younger than the non-Hispanic counter part, with the head of household anywhere between 25 and 44 years old is a market worth investing in.
