About Father’s Day:

The idea of a public Father’s Day holiday was conceived by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., while she listened to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm.
The first Father’s Day was announced and celebrated on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.
The necktie is the most common Father’s Day gift.
In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day with a presidential proclamation.
In 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made Father’s Day a permanent celebration every third Sunday in June.
Father’s Day is the fourth most popular card sending holiday in the world after Christmas, Valentine’s day and Mother’s day.
Father’s Day is not a modern invention. It was first celebrated by a Babylonian youth named Elmesu, who carved a father’s day card out of clay around 4,000 years ago. His special card was to wish his father good health and a long life.
