Together with my colleagues Councilmembers Mitchell Englander and Nury Martinez, I introduced a motion that would reasonably regulate how drones can be used. As drones become more popular among enthusiasts and hobbyist, it is imperative that the city take proactive steps to ensure their responsible use. Under our proposed rules drones would be prohibited from use during emergency situations and within 5 miles of any airport in the city.
I want to be sure the use of drones does not adversely impact crucial, lifesaving and property saving actions by many agencies and departments including the Los Angeles Fire Department. This past Wednesday, I was joined by Congressman Adam Schiff, Assemblyman Mike Gatto, Councilmember Mitchell Englander, and the Los Angeles Fire Department to coordinate the various solutions at every level of government to ensure the public's safety. When drones fly, emergency responders can't respond and every minute counts.
