Taste of Soul Celebrates 10th Anniversary in Los Angeles
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the annual 'Taste of Soul' family festival in CD10 brought over more than 400 vendors, many of whom hail from South Los Angeles, that served up delicious food and artisan wares.
The crowd size throughout the day ranged from 380,000 to 450,000, which makes the 'Taste of Soul' the largest African American-owned and sponsored annual festival in the United States.
"I can't believe it has already been 10 years," said Wesson. "Thank you Taste of Soul for a great day in our community. Looks like everyone had a blast."
Kaiser Permanente Breaks Ground on Long Awaited Medical Facility in CD10
The construction on a new Kaiser Permanente medical facility is underway at Marlton Square.
The outpatient center is set to serve the neighborhood of 80,000 people with services such as diagnostic imaging and pediatric care.
"After years of hard work and dedication I was pleased to help Kaiser Permanente break ground on a new medical facility at Marlton Square," said Wesson. "We can't wait for the ribbon cutting."
Wesson's Nominee Unanimously Appointed to Ethics Commission
The City Council unanimously approved Council President Wesson's appointee, Melinda Murray, to the city's Ethics Commission.
Ms. Murray is currently a Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County and has dedicated her career to protecting victims of child abuse, domestic violence, and sex crimes. She serves on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Black Lawyers and is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the National Bar Association.
The Ethics Commission works to preserve public trust by promoting elections and government decisions that are transparent and accountable. Thank you for your service, Ms. Murray.
Peggy Albrecht Friendly House Honors Wesson for Continued Service to the Community
Peggy Albrecht Friendly House Los Angeles, the first residential program in the country for women recovering from alcohol and drug abuse, honored Council President Herb Wesson, along with television personality, designer and actress Kelly Osbourne, and singer-songwriter and musician Moby at its 26th annual Awards Luncheon.
Wesson received the "Excellence in Service Award" for his dedication to protecting one of society's most vulnerable populations.
"The organization does the good work of helping women recover from substance abuse," said Wesson. "Thank you for all that you do to strengthen families and communities."
Wesson Recognized for his Support to Ending Domestic Violence
On Sunday, Council President Wesson was honored by the Good Shepherd Shelter for Battered Women with Children with the "Champion of Courage Award." Wesson received the award for his support of the shelter and his commitment to end the cycle of domestic violence.
"Thank you to my good friends at The Good Shepherd Shelter for Battered Women with Children for doing such amazing work in our community," said Wesson. "I was honored to spend time with you all."
Founded in 1977, the Good Shepherd Shelter was the first battered women's shelter in the city of Los Angeles. The shelter is the sole establishment in Los Angeles that provides an on-site school for the children, an adult Learning Center for the mothers, legal assistance, mental health therapy, medical screenings, individual apartment units for each family and reliable aftercare upon leaving the shelter.
